THE LESBIAN DONKEY

The Lesbian Donkey is a cherished family venture established in 2013, rooted in the picturesque Plomari region. Situated amidst challenging terrain, their olive groves thrive through traditional cultivation methods, eschewing modern machinery. Guided by the principles of organic farming, only tree-ripened fruits are handpicked, while fallen produce enriches the soil naturally. With gentle care, olives are gathered using time-honoured chestnut wood sticks, then swiftly transported to the nearby mill for cold pressing in Palaiochori village. This blend of tradition and innovation yields a superior product, a testament to our commitment to quality.

GLUTEN FREE OATS - OATMEAL OF ALFORD

We have been farming on our 3rd generation farm in the North East of Scotland since the 1940s. We have always had sustainability close to our heart, whether it is planting hedging around our fields, creating areas dedicated for wildlife or being early adopters of renewable energy.

Our home farm is an organic farm where it has been organically farmed for 40 years. Here the land goes through various rotations, so it allows the land to recover after growing crops. We use no chemical applications in the growing of our organic oats.

We work together with a neighbouring estate to grow our conventional gluten free oats. This is where we use minimal applications similar to organic farming, but the oats do get additional fertiliser to support their growth and one spray for weeds shortly after they are planted in the spring. The oat itself never sees any chemicals, additionally there is no use of fungicides or pesticides on our oats.

The advantage of oats is that they are a hardy plant and can grow in more challenging areas such as the rolling hills of Aberdeenshire, where there is opportunity for wildlife and nature to thrive alongside the growing of our oats. So much so that one of our biggest problems is deer and birds eating the oats as they grow.
